League night in Austin turned into a rules debate that killed the fun

Last Tuesday at Dragon's Lair, we had a three hour game of Spirit Island end with a 45 minute argument over whether a fear card triggered before or after the invader phase. The guy running it kept citing the rulebook but wouldn't actually pass it around. I get that house rules matter, but we lost two players who just wanted to play, not litigate. Since then, I've started timing any rules discussion at 10 minutes max and then we vote. Has anyone else had a session derailed like this, or is my group just weird?

Buddy of mine had the same thing happen with Gloomhaven, dude quoted the book for twenty minutes then just rage-quit the campaign over the whole group. After that, we just let the owner decide and move on, nobody's got time for that.
