Why does everyone hang pictures at eye level without checking the furniture?

I keep seeing people in this group post photos of their new gallery walls and the bottom edges are all lined up perfectly with the top of their couch. But then there's a huge gap above. That drives me CRAZY. My living room has a 9 foot ceiling and I made that mistake on my first try. Had to patch 6 holes and start over. The trick is to hang art so the center of the piece lines up with the average person's eye level, which is about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. If you hang it based on where the couch ends, you end up with a weird floating look. Anyone else notice this or am I being too picky about it?

Wait till you hang something at 58 inches and then walk three steps back and it suddenly looks like it's floating in the middle of the wall. My wife hung a mirror at 62 inches according to some interior designer she follows online and now it looks like it's about to take off for the ceiling. I had to go behind her and drop it down two inches, she still thinks I'm wrong. Your mileage may vary but I swear the whole measurement thing is just a starting point.
