The library book sale changed my whole entryway wall, cost me $3

I stopped by our local library's annual book sale last Saturday in Portland, just looking for something for the kids. They had a bin of old hardcover books with fancy spines, 10 cents each. I grabbed 15 of them, mostly old encyclopedias and classic novels that nobody was buying. When I got home, I stripped off the dust jackets and nailed the covers directly to the wall in a crooked grid pattern. It took me about an hour with a hammer and some small nails. Now my entryway looks like a weird little library exhibit, and people always stop and ask about it. Has anyone else used book covers or spines as wall art? How do you keep them from curling at the edges over time?

My neighbor did the same thing with a stack of old National Geographics, glued the covers to plywood and it's held up for years with zero curling. Did you try a thin coat of mod podge on the backs before you nailed them up?
