Rant: retired smith in Ohio told me to quench my 1084 in warm canola oil, and now I can't tell if he saved me or messed me up
He swore by 130 degree canola oil for 1084 at 1475 degrees, and my first two blades came out dead hard with zero cracks, but a guy at my local guild meeting says that's way too slow and I got lucky, so I'm stuck between trusting the guy with 40 years at the anvil or the charts, and I want to know if anybody else has run warm canola and gotten repeatable results or just one lucky batch.
