Guy at the Rockford swap meet told me to stop quenching 4140 in water, and I didn't listen
Cracked a pair of tongs right through the reins on the second heat, a $40 bar of steel gone in about 10 minutes. He just looked at my bucket and said 'that steel wants oil, son' like it was the most obvious thing in the world. What are you all quenching your 4140 in, and does it change if you're going for a spring temper?
