Vent: my commute went from 45 minutes fighting traffic on Route 9 to 22 minutes on a bike, and I'm never going back
I used to sit in my car on Route 9 near Worcester for 45 minutes every morning, burning through about a quarter tank a week just idling. Around 8 months ago my rear brake pads went metal on metal and the shop quoted me $620, so I bought a used Trek for $180 off Marketplace instead. First few rides took me 38 minutes because I was stopping at every light and walking the big hill by the reservoir. Now I do the same 7.2 miles in 22 minutes and I actually feel awake when I get to my desk at 8:30. The one thing I still can't figure out is rain gear, since my pants get soaked from the knees down no matter what I wear. Has anyone found a cheap fix for that, or do I just accept wet shins until April?
So you solved your brake pad problem by becoming the brake pad? Honestly the rain thing is just part of the deal, wet shins build character. Just tell people the reservoir splashed you, sounds way cooler than admitting you forgot your rain pants again.
