That rainy Saturday in Portland taught me about chain stretch

I was helping a friend fix up an old cruiser he got for 80 bucks and we kept having to adjust the rear derailleur every few miles. Turns out the chain was stretched past the wear gauge I had in my kit, I never even thought to check it first. After we swapped in a new chain and cassette the shifting felt perfect, but it made me realize I always assume cable tension is the problem before checking the easy stuff. Now I check chain wear on every tune-up before I touch the barrel adjuster, it saves me a ton of time. Has anyone else had a similar moment where you skipped the basic check and chased your tail for hours?
