PSA: trust the shop manual, not the old timer

A guy at the co-op told me to skip the torque spec on my crank bolts, said 20 years of wrenching was enough. 40 miles later the arm creaked loose on a gravel climb near Rutland. Has anyone else had a "trust me" tip bite them on a critical part?

and honestly that old timer energy is how i ended up with a cracked crank arm on my commuter last year. same deal, dude said torque wrenches are for people who cant feel it, so i just gave it a good grunt. thing snapped right at the pedal threads during a sprint and i had to walk 3 miles home, never again. now i torque everything to spec even the dang bottle cage bolts, learned that lesson the hard way.
