My old shop foreman said grease is cheap, I should've listened sooner
Guy named Rick at my first shop job in Phoenix. 20 years turning wrenches. He always said "grease is cheap, bearings ain't." I thought it was just old timer talk.
Last month I did a full hub rebuild on my commuter. Used the fancy marine grease I had left over. Water got in on a rainy ride two days later. Races were toast within 40 miles. New set cost me $180.
Rick's rule was simple. Pack them full, wipe the excess, do it again. No shortcuts. I get it now.
Anyone else learn a shop trick the expensive way?

Did you ever read that thing on Sheldon Brown's site about greasing hubs? He says the whole point is to fill the hub body so the grease pushes out and blocks water at the seals. Packing just the bearings leaves air pockets and that's where the water gets in. Rick was basically doing the Sheldon method without knowing it.
