Just flushed $60 on a 'universal' bottom bracket tool from Harbor Freight
The splines were a fraction of a millimeter off and it rounded out a Shimano BB-ES300 cup before I even got to 40 Nm. Had to order the proper tool and a new bottom bracket, which set me back another $85. Anyone know a decent universal tool that actually works, or should I just stick with the brand-specific ones?

My Park Tool BBT-22 did the same thing to an old Octalink bracket last year. Those universal ones never seem to get the engagement right, do they? I just buy the specific tool for the job now.

Yeah, those universal tools are a gamble. I rounded off a Shimano BB once trying to make it work. Now I keep the specific Park Tool BBT-32 for Hollowtech II and a separate one for the old square taper stuff. It's more money up front, but it saves so much headache and ruined parts. I learned the hard way that a perfect fit matters way more than saving a few bucks on a multi-tool.

So @the_fiona, you just gave up on universal tools too?
