Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with pellet grills when stick burners exist?

I watched three friends switch to pellets over the last year, and every brisket they've put out since tastes like the same flat, smoky-ish version of everything else. I get the convenience, but we used to argue about bark and fire management at every cookout, and now nobody even asks where the wood comes from. Has anyone else noticed the flavors getting homogenized since the pellet crowd took over the neighborhood cooks?
