My dad's secret was just a store-bought rub he'd pretend to mix up in the garage.

My uncle's dry rub recipe uses brown sugar and paprika, and he guards it like a state secret. But when he finally shared it with me, it was such a BIG deal. I remember the first time I made ribs with it, my neighbors came over to ask what smelled so good.

Totally get this whole secret recipe thing. My grandma had this spice blend she put in her meatloaf that she wouldn't tell anyone, not even her own sisters. She finally wrote it down for me on a tiny piece of paper when I went to college, and I felt like I was given the keys to a castle. Made it in my first apartment, and my roommate's boyfriend asked if he could buy a container of the mix. The power of a good smell bringing people around is so real, it's like a superpower.
