I finally admitted my thrift store book hauling bag was a lost cause after the bottom gave out on a $3.50 stack of paperbacks last Tuesday
The canvas tote ripped right through the seam when I bent over to grab a vintage Stephen King from the bottom shelf at Goodwill, and now I am using a plastic grocery bag until I find a sturdier one at the depot sale this weekend.

You ever notice how the really sturdy bags never make it to the thrift store in the first place? In my experience, the best book totes are the ones you'd never guess would work. I've been using an old army duffle bag I found at a garage sale for years now. It's ugly as sin, olive green with a broken zipper, but that thing can hold a solid thirty pounds of paperbacks without even flinching. Your grocery bag is a temporary fix, but try to think outside the canvas tote box. A sturdy plastic milk crate from behind the grocery store works great too, and it keeps the books from getting squished.
