Guy at the estate sale in Toledo said 'don't buy books from the basement,' and I ignored him
I hit an estate sale on Saturday in Toledo where the whole basement was lined with old paperbacks, and the guy running it said flat out 'don't buy books from the basement, they've been damp since the flood.' I figured for a quarter each I'd take a chance on 14 of them anyway. Got them home and every single one had that musty smell and wavy pages, and two already had tiny spots of white fuzz on the covers. Now I'm out $3.50 and my whole living room smells like a wet dog. Has anyone actually saved a damp book haul like this, or should I just toss them and eat the loss?
Been there, man. Bought a box of paperbacks off a guy's porch after a storm and my wife made me keep them in the garage for a month hoping the smell would air out. It did not, so save yourself the time and just chunk them before the fuzz spreads to your good books.
