I lost $45 on those cashback apps that promise easy money through bank linking

Signed up for three different apps that connect to your bank account to track spending and give rewards, but after 6 months I only got $3.47 back while they had full access to all my transactions and I'm worried about what they're actually doing with my data - has anyone checked their privacy policies lately?

My buddy Dan signed up for one of those apps and a few months later started getting spam calls offering him loans and credit cards from companies he never talked to. He looked into the app's privacy policy and it basically said they can sell your transaction data to whoever pays them. He unlinked his account and the calls stopped after a couple weeks. I'd bet those 45 bucks got sold for way more than the app ever gave you back.

Those $3.47 probably cost them way less than selling your data to 47 different data brokers.
