Dropped $50 on a fee for using my debit card overseas and it stung bad

I was in Mexico City last month and used my debit card from Chase to grab dinner. They hit me with a 3% foreign transaction fee plus a $5 ATM charge on top of it. Total came to like $50 in fees for that one trip and I didn't even realize until I checked my statement. Anyone else just deal with these fees or do you actually switch cards for travel?

Oh man, same thing happened to me in Japan and I was so annoyed.

Next time just use a VPN set to Japan before you buy.
