Visited a community garden in Chicago last spring and saw how they stacked milk crates for vertical growing
Watched an old guy there grow cherry tomatoes in a 3-tier milk crate setup on his concrete slab. Has anyone else tried stacking containers like that on a small balcony without them tipping over?

You ever try zip ties and a bungee cord wrapped around the whole stack? I've seen folks in my neighborhood use that trick on their balconies. Works like a charm for milk crates full of dirt. Just make sure the bottom crate is sitting on something flat and stable, not just two slats. A buddy of mine used a cheap plastic shoe rack tray underneath and his tomatoes never budged in a storm.

That zip tie and bungee cord setup actually makes a lot of sense... I used to think bungees were just for holding stuff in a car trunk but you've totally changed my mind on it.
