My plastic window box split open after a week of rain

I had it full of baby lettuce on my south facing balcony, and the seam just gave way during that heavy rain on Tuesday. I had to scoop up all the wet soil and plants into a bucket before anything else fell. What's a good sturdy material for a long planter that won't crack like that?

My friend's concrete planter in Denver cracked after one freeze, so she switched to fiberglass. Those things are basically indestructible.

Plastic planters are actually pretty tough if you get the right kind. That split sounds more like a bad seam or super thin material, not all plastic being weak. Maybe try a thicker polypropylene one next time, mine have lasted years.
