My mom insisted I plant my tomatoes in a huge pot

Honestly, she said a 5 gallon bucket was the absolute minimum for each plant. I tried it with just two plants on my north facing balcony in Seattle. Ngl, they got so big and heavy I could barely move them, and they blocked all the sun for my peppers. This year I'm using smaller containers and they're doing way better. Has anyone else had a parent give them gardening advice that totally backfired?

Ugh, my grandma was the same with herbas... she made me plant mint in a giant pot and it just took over everything.

Oh man, the "5 gallon bucket minimum" thing sounds so familiar. My dad was the same way with cucumbers, swore they needed these giant tubs. Mine just got all vine and no fruit, it was a total mess. I switched to a way shallower but wider planter box last season and finally got a real harvest. Sometimes the old school advice just doesn't fit a small space.
