My balcony peppers thrived after I ignored the watering schedule advice

I followed online guides to water my peppers every other day, but they looked sad. Then I started checking the soil with my finger and only watered when dry, and they bounced back. Why do so many tips skip the basic touch test?

My grandma's old gardening book from the 70s had a strict weekly schedule and her plants always did great. I actually find that a rough calendar reminder works better for me because I forget to check the soil for days. In really hot weather, my pots dry out so fast that waiting for the finger test would stress the plants. Those basic guides are trying to give new people a simple starting point so they don't overthink it.

My neighbor waters his whole garden every Tuesday and Saturday no matter what, and his plants look fine. I get what jade647 is saying about pots drying out fast, but for most people sticking to a schedule just adds stress. Plants are tougher than we think, and a lot of watering advice makes it seem like a science project. If your plants are alive, you're probably doing okay even without checking the soil every single day.

That bit about skipping the basic touch test is so true. I killed my first tomato plants by watering on a strict schedule. The leaves turned yellow and just fell off. Now I stick my finger in the dirt every couple days and only water if it's dry past my first knuckle. Those online guides just give a one size fits all rule that doesn't work for everyone's pots or weather.
