My grandma's 1970s bread recipe needed a reset button
She always told me to add flour until it feels right, but after three bricks this year I finally asked her for exact measurements at her kitchen table in Ohio. She laughed and admitted the recipe card originally said 4 cups but she'd been guessing since the 80s because her handwriting faded. Anyone else inherit vague family recipes that turned out to be more like a suggestion than instructions?

Every flour brand soaks up water different, so her guessing actually made sense for fifty years.
