My attempt at a Boston cream pie turned into a custard flood

I tried making one for my husband's birthday last Friday, and the vanilla custard filling was way too thin. It just poured out the sides when I tried to stack the layers, making a huge mess on my kitchen counter. Has anyone else had this happen and know how to thicken the custard properly?

Boston cream pie custard needs a full three tablespoons of cornstarch to set right.
