Just realized my cake recipe works better with less sugar

Everyone says more sugar means a better crumb. Tried cutting it by a quarter cup in my go-to vanilla cake. Actually came out lighter and less dense. Anyone else find less sugar helps certain bakes?

My friend's brownies got way fudgier with less sugar.

Oh wow, that totally tracks. My buddy tried a recipe that cut the sugar by like a third, and he said they turned out super dense and almost like chocolate fudge. He was shocked because he thought they'd be dry, but they were just super rich. Kinda makes me want to experiment with my own recipe now.
