Rant: My paver patio took 4 weekends instead of 1 because of one dumb mistake

I didn't realize I needed a proper 4-inch compacted gravel base (not just sand) until after the first big rain washed everything out. It took me 3 extra weekends to dig it all up and start over. Anyone else learn the hard way about proper base layers for pavers?

Read somewhere that base prep is like 80% of a good paver job. The guy who designed my driveway said most people skip the compacted gravel and just dump sand down, then wonder why everything shifts after one hard rain. Sounds like you got the full lesson the hard way, like everyone does. Digging it all back up is brutal, but at least now it'll actually last more than a season.

Dude you're totally right and it applies to so much more than just pavers. It's the same with painting - everyone wants to pick the color but nobody wants to sand and prime the walls first. Or cooking, everyone focuses on the main dish but the basic stock or the way you prep your veggies makes or breaks the whole meal. People always want the fun visible part to be perfect but skip the boring foundation stuff that actually holds it all together. It's like we're all hardwired to chase the quick payoff instead of doing the slow work that keeps things from falling apart later.
