My contractor buddy in Reno said my raised beds were overbuilt, and now I'm not so sure he's wrong
After 4 seasons of hauling wheelbarrows of soil into 2x12 cedar frames that cost me $460, he pointed out that the plants don't care about the lumber thickness, so has anyone else downsized their beds and seen the same crop yields?

The cedar boards are doing more than just holding dirt, they are holding heat and moisture for the roots. Those thin metal or plastic beds dry out way faster in the summer, and the soil temp swings more. In Reno's heat, that extra thermal mass from 2x12s can mean the difference between plants stressing at 3pm and staying happy. Plus, they don't rot out in a few years, so you are not hauling soil twice. If you downsize, you might get the same yield the first season, but the long game is not there. Keep the cedar, your plants are better off even if your wallet isn't.
