My neighbor's oregano tip saved 4 hens from the heat last July

Last summer we hit 96 degrees for a week straight and my girls were panting like crazy. My neighbor Bill, who keeps quail, said to freeze oregano in ice cube trays and drop a couple in their water. I figured it was nonsense but tried it. They drank way more water and the panting slowed down. I don't know if it was the oregano or just cooler water, but it worked. Anyone else use herbs in the water for summer heat, or is this just a fluke?
