Medicated starter feed is a scam for most backyard flocks

Everyone in my local coop group pushes medicated starter, but after losing 2 chicks to coccidiosis despite using it, I switched to plain feed plus apple cider vinegar in their water last spring and haven't had a sick bird since. The vet in Austin told me most backyard coops are too clean for coccidia to build up anyway, so why dose them with drugs they don't need? Anyone else skip the medicated stuff and go straight to natural prevention?
