I gave my hens a kiddie pool in the Texas heat and it backfired
It hit 102 degrees here in Austin, so I put a shallow plastic kiddie pool in their run with about 3 inches of water. Instead of cooling off, they started throwing all their pine shavings and dirt into it, making a huge muddy mess. Now I've got a swampy area and worried about bugs. I thought it was a good idea, but maybe they just prefer dust baths? Has anyone had luck with a better way to cool them down?

Guess chickens just love making a mess more than they like being cool. Mine did the exact same thing and turned their water into a mud pie. What if you try freezing some fruit in a block of ice for them to peck at instead?

Watch them turn that frozen fruit block into a slushy mudslide in about five minutes flat. They'll peck at the blueberries for two seconds, then just kick the whole icy thing into the dirt. I swear, they see a clean, cool treat and take it as a personal challenge to make it gross. It's like their main hobby is turning anything nice into a swamp.
