A friend said my coop was too clean and it made me rethink my whole setup
I used to scrub my coop in Seattle with soap and water every single Sunday, but a friend who keeps birds in Oregon told me I was stripping away all the good microbes and making my hens more prone to illness. I switched to just scraping the worst of it and adding fresh pine shavings, and honestly, they seem healthier. Does anyone else think we can be a little too clean with our coops?

Oh man, that's it exactly. We treat coops like bathrooms when they're more like a backyard. You need that healthy dirt. My birds got way more sneezes when I was blasting everything with vinegar every week. Now I just do a quick clean and add fresh bedding. It's not being lazy, it's working with how they actually live.

Yeah, the "stripping away good microbes" thing really hit me too. I was doing the same deep clean routine and it made a total mess of my flock's health.

Wait, you were cleaning with vinegar every single week? That's wild. I guess it makes sense you'd wipe out all the good stuff doing that. Elliotl24, I'm shocked it only caused sneezing and not a full blown disaster. My neighbor's birds got real sick from something similar. It's like we're trying to make their home a hospital when it just needs to be a home.
