TIL a backyard fire pit needs 3 feet of clearance, not the 18 inches I built mine with

I built a small stone fire pit behind my garage in April and spaced it 18 inches from the fence because that felt like plenty at the time. Then my neighbor, who used to do landscaping work, came over and pulled up a county code page on his phone showing most places want at least 3 feet, and in dry season some want 10 feet from anything burnable. Now I'm eyeing that fence post every time I light it, so how close is everyone else running theirs?
