Watching a crow at the Portland airport taught me to put my feeders way out in the open.

I saw it land on a bare patch of asphalt, look around for a full minute, then eat a fry, and now I keep my platform feeder in the middle of the lawn so the juncos feel safe enough to come down.

That's a good observation about the crow needing open space to feel safe. But putting a feeder in the middle of the lawn might backfire for juncos. They like to have some cover real close by, like a bush or a brush pile, so they can dart back in. A totally open lawn can make them feel just as nervous as a crowded spot. Maybe try it halfway between the open and some shelter.

My juncos always use that big rhododendron by the fence as their safe spot. I totally get what you're saying, james_martin93, about finding that middle ground. I moved my feeder about ten feet out from the bushes and it made a huge difference for them. They seem way more willing to come out and feed now.
