My buddy swore by placing a mirror near the feeder to scare off hawks

I tried it for a week and ended up with a bunch of confused cardinals and one hawk that just sat on my fence staring at itself. Has anyone else had this backfire completely or am I just doing it wrong?

I gotta disagree with you though, I think mirrors work best when you really set them up right. You probably just had a lazy hawk that day. I've got mine angled down and facing outward so it reflects the sky, not the feeder area itself, and it's cut down on visits from the local Cooper's hawk to almost zero. The trick is not to make the hawk see itself but to create a moving flash of reflection that spooks it. A single mirror on the fence is just a shiny decoration to a bird that's been around the block.

3 mirrors angled downward? That's wild, I didn't know you had to get that specific with them. Ngl I just propped an old bathroom mirror against the fence post so I probably deserved the confused cardinals. Tbh your Cooper's hawk must be way more jumpy than mine, because mine literally sat there preening while staring at its own reflection for like ten minutes.
