My paper map habit makes trips more fun for me
I just finished a backpacking trip where I only used a paper map, no apps. It felt like a win because I noticed more around me. Lots of people say you need GPS to not get lost, but I like the old way. For example, last month I found a secret lake by following a hand drawn map from a ranger. Without my phone beeping, I could hear the birds and take my time. This small change has made my hikes feel like real adventures again. I know it sounds silly, but it works for me.

Paper maps are okay, but you're kinda overstating their importance. Phones with GPS are reliable tools that prevent real trouble on the trail. Honestly, it's just a preference, not a deep life hack.

Oh sure, because getting told what to do by a magic rectangle in your pocket is the peak of outdoor fun. Nothing says adventure like following a blinking dot with the same focus as a delivery driver. Meanwhile, struggling to fold a map back up wrong is its own kind of wilderness skill. Maybe the real trouble to prevent is forgetting how to actually look at the world instead of a screen. But hey, to each their own.

Nathan gets it. Maps are for the VIBE, GPS is just for the job. Sometimes getting lost is the whole point.
