The 47-slide deck that tanked a demo in 9 minutes flat

I sat in on a sales call Tuesday where the rep walked through slide 3 of 47 and the prospect literally muted themselves for 6 minutes, then came back and asked for a price sheet instead (ouch). We've all seen the pattern, cramming every feature into a deck like it's a spec sheet, and it kills the whole conversation because buyers want the outcome, not the bolt count. Has anyone else watched a demo die this way, and what's the weirdest thing you've done to force shorter pitches, like setting a 10-slide hard cap or banning text bullets entirely?

We capped our sales deck at eight slides with a hard rule, one outcome per slide. If the rep catches themselves explaining a feature, they have to stop and tie it back to what the buyer actually gets. Last month we demoed to a manufacturing client and they asked for the full deck after, which never happened before. The weird trick that worked was playing a five minute timer on the conference speaker, not secretly, but openly. It changes the energy fast because the buyer sees you respect their time, and the rep has to make every word count. Trying to get rid of bullets entirely was a disaster though, people need some structure to hang on to.
