Distributor cap melted on a 95 F150 in July, forgotten heat shields

Old trucks used to just run forever, but then plastic parts take over. Last summer near Bakersfield, my 95 F150 started sputtering at a stoplight. Popped the hood, the distributor cap had actually warped, rotor was scorched too, never seen that before. Turns out someone removed the heat shield years ago and I never looked. Cost me $80 for cap, rotor, and a used shield from a salvage yard. Anyone else running older rigs where the simple fixes are hiding behind someone else's past lazy work?
