Tried buffing a headlight with toothpaste on a 2011 Civic, and now I'm out $180
Customer saw it on YouTube and asked me to try it, so I did, and it turned the yellow haze into a cloudy mess that needed a full wet sand and re-clear. Now I keep a real 3M kit on the bench and just tell folks the toothpaste thing only works on glass, not polycarbonate. Any of you ever cave to a customer's internet trick and regret it?
Cringed reading that polycarbonate part. Toothpaste is abrasive, sure, but it's made for enamel and tile, not plastic lenses with a factory UV coat on top. You basically sanded off the one layer protecting the plastic, so of course it hazed up worse once it dried. YouTube tricks always skip the part where the guy filming has a new headlight waiting in the garage.
