PSA: hand sanding a fender vs DA, and why I finally gave in after 15 years
I spent most of my career block sanding every panel by hand because that is what the old guys at the shop in Gary taught me back in 2005. Last month I had a beat up Silverado fender with three coats of old paint and I tried a DA with 180 grit for the rough cut, then finished by hand, and the whole thing took me 40 minutes instead of two hours. My hands did not cramp up and the cut was flatter than what I used to get with a block on that curved section. I still do my final pass by hand because nothing beats feeling the panel, but I am not going back to full hand sanding for stripping. Any of you still doing it all by hand or have you mixed in a DA for the heavy stuff?
