Hot take: I used to think block sanding with 80 grit was fine, then a paint rep in Dallas set me straight
I always figured 80 grit was good enough for blocking filler, save time and paper, right? Then last Tuesday a PPG rep stopped by our shop in Fort Worth for a demo and dropped a number that stuck with me. He said going from 80 straight to 180 leaves scratches deep enough that your primer can shrink back into them after a couple months in the sun, and he showed us a hood with 40 grit pigtails still showing after 3 coats of high build. I was doing exactly that on a Camry quarter panel two bays over. He had us switch to a 120 then 180 then 220 progression, and yeah it took maybe 20 extra minutes per panel but the guide coat came off way cleaner. I'm not saying 80 is useless, but I was using it way later in the process than I should have been. What grit do you guys jump to after your filler is shaped?
