A paint rep in Denver called out my masking trick, now I do it different

I used to overlap my tape edges by about an inch on every job. This PPG rep watched me tape a bumper and said all that overlap leaves ridges that show up in the clear coat. He told me to cut the tape at 45 degrees at the edges instead of folding it over. Tried it on a Camry bumper yesterday and the line came out clean, no sanding needed. Anyone else get straight feedback like that from a vendor that actually changed how you work?

Honestly hearing that from a rep would have burned me at first too, cause you think you know your tricks. But man, that 45 degree cut thing is the kind of tip you can't unsee once you try it. I've been painting bumpers for years and I always folded the tape over, figured overlap was just how everyone did it. The ridge thing makes SO much sense now that he pointed it out, clear coat is picky that way. Good on you for actually listening and testing it out, most folks would just nod and keep doing their old habit. It's kinda rare to get a vendor who gives real advice instead of just pushing product.
