That famous Orion Nebula shot everyone loves is overprocessed
I keep seeing the same 2023 image of M42 floating around with colors that look like a unicorn threw up on it. The real nebula through my 8-inch scope in Flagstaff last month showed soft pinks and grays, not that neon purple mess. Am I the only one who prefers the raw, less saturated versions over the viral ones?

Took my 10-inch dob out to a dark site last winter and tried the same thing with M42. Ended up doing a quick 2-minute exposure with my DSLR, just enough to catch the core and the wings without pushing the data too hard. The result looked way closer to what my eyes saw, soft gray-pink with a hint of green in the outer bits. That viral purple version makes me laugh, honestly, because no eyepiece or camera is gonna give you that unless you're stacking for hours and pushing saturation to the max. Now I just process for the faint stuff like the trapezium and leave the colors alone, and it feels way more honest to the hobby.
