Stood under a dark sky in eastern Oregon last night and finally saw the Milky Way core with my own eyes

I've seen a million photos of it but nothing prepared me for how massive and bright it looked just hanging there above the desert. Has anyone else had that moment where a picture totally undersells the real thing?

What makes you so sure you weren't just seeing a really impressive photo in person, with all the light pollution scrubbed out by a decent camera? The human eye can't actually resolve that much detail or color at once, it's always a washed-out blur compared to what a long exposure gets. Seems like everyone just convinces themselves it's better because they finally got away from a city.

Friend of mine went out to the same kind of spot in New Mexico a few years back. He always talked about how the photos looked fake, like someone just photoshopped a bunch of stars in. But he said that first night out there it was almost scary how bright and close it looked, like you could reach up and touch it. He called me that night and I could hear the wind in the background, and he just kept saying "you gotta see this, it's not like the pictures at all." Still makes me want to drive out to the middle of nowhere someday.
