Stacking 40 short shots beat 8 long ones, and my Orion nebula photo finally showed the trapezium
Last month I shot the Orion nebula twice from my driveway outside Flagstaff. First night I did 8 subs at 4 minutes each (32 minutes total), and the stars were just blobs with no detail. Second night I did 40 subs at 45 seconds each (30 minutes, basically the same time) and the trapezium stars were actually separated. The short shots also threw out way less data, only 3 got tossed by clouds versus 5 of my long ones. I think the long exposures were just soaking up my light pollution and tracking errors together. Has anyone else found a sweet spot for sub length on a cheap mount, or am I fooling myself that it was the exposure time and not just a calmer night?
