I finally looked up the real size of the Horsehead Nebula and the numbers blew my mind
I was reading an old astronomy book from the library and it said the dark part of the Horsehead is about 3 light-years across. That means the 'head' alone is over 17 trillion miles wide. I always thought it was just a cute little shape in the photos, not something you could fit our entire solar system inside thousands of times over. Does anyone else feel like the scale of space gets totally lost in these beautiful pictures?

My friend had a total meltdown at the planetarium last year. They showed the Pillars of Creation and put a tiny little dot in the corner labeled "our solar system" for scale. She just kept whispering "no way" over and over. It's like our brains just can't process it, the pictures make everything look like a postcard.

The scale of space is just brutal. We're basically invisible specks, huh?
