Can we talk about over-processing Milky Way shots until they look fake?

I've been browsing photos in this community for about 6 months now, and I keep seeing the same thing. People take a decent stacked image of the core and then push the saturation and sharpening way past what the data actually shows. The stars end up with weird blue halos and the dust lanes look like solid black stripes, not the soft brown and grey they really are. I know because I did this exact thing with my first attempt at the Eagle Nebula back in August, and it took a friend pulling up a Hubble comparison to make me see it. Does anyone else think less editing actually sells the scale of these objects better, or is the punchy look just what gets likes now?
