My best tip came from a cashier at a small feed store outside Austin

I was grabbing some chicken feed last spring and the cashier asked what breed I kept. I told her I was struggling with egg eating in my flock. She just laughed and said "give them a golf ball painted red." I thought she was joking but tried it anyway. Put one fake red golf ball in each nesting box and within a week the problem stopped. That one interaction saved me more time and frustration than any forum post or book I read. Anyone else gotten strange advice from a random local that actually worked way better than the standard fix?

Oh man, that golf ball trick is genius, I love it. Had a similar thing happen with my neighbor who keeps goats, I was complaining about my rooster getting aggressive and he just said "tie a stuffed animal to his back with a bungee cord for two days." I thought he was messing with me but I was desperate, so I strapped a little plush bunny to that mean rooster. He spent those two days looking over his shoulder and trying to shake it off, and when I took it off he never attacked me again, just walked around all nervous like the universe might strap another bunny to him at any moment. Sometimes the weirdest local advice just works because it's so outside the box.
