Moved to Phoenix last spring and the guy at the hardware store on 7th Ave told me my swamp cooler would be fine, I want to hear both sides on this
I moved from Ohio to Phoenix last spring and figured my old swamp cooler knowledge would carry over. The guy at the hardware store on 7th Ave told me to just run it wide open all summer and it would be fine, but my neighbor says that is why my electric bill hit $280 in July and my unit froze up twice. One camp says swamp coolers only work if you crack a window for airflow, the other says seal the house tight and let the pump do the work. I did the window thing for a bit and it felt cooler but the dust was awful. So which is it, do you trust the local guy who sells the parts or the neighbor who has lived here 20 years?
Did the neighbor actually explain why he thinks you should seal the house tight, or was that just his gut feeling? I ask because swamp coolers work by pulling dry air through wet pads, and if the air has nowhere to escape the whole thing just kind of chokes and gets muggy. The dust problem you hit with the window cracked is real though, maybe ask the 7th Ave guy what he does about that part. Curious whether either of them mentioned covering the cooler in the winter or how they handle the monsoon months.
