A guy in line at the Ballard farmers market asked me where the real locals eat, and his reaction stuck with me
I was waiting for a coffee near the Ballard farmers market on a rainy Saturday and this visitor from Ohio asked me where locals actually eat, not the spots on the food blogs. I pointed him to a little teriyaki place by the locks that has been there since I was a kid, and he looked almost let down at first. He wrote it in his notes app and said he'd been burned by three "local favorite" lists already that weekend. Then he asked me how I decide what counts as a real local spot, and I honestly didn't have a clean answer. I told him it's usually the places where the owner knows your order, but that felt too simple once I said it out loud. How do you all decide what makes a place a true local pick when someone asks you?
