I did the same thing with a 1770s King George III copper. Left it in vinegar for 10 minutes trying to clean it up and basically turned it into a smooth brown disc. Now I just leave them alone.

Leave them alone is the move honestly @jade271, that vinegar mistake happens to all of us once.
