Paid $180 for a 'rare' Roman coin, turned out to be a tourist fake from 1998

Grabbed this denarius from a market stall in Rome last spring, seller had some story about a farmer finding it near Tivoli. Got it home and a buddy at the university lab took one look and said the patina was spray paint, matched a known fake batch from the 90s. Anyone else burned on vendor 'authenticity' stories or am I the only sucker who didn't ask for a provenance paper?
