My neighbor's old field found a roman coin, now her garden has a dig site
She lives two streets over in Colchester. Bought the house in 1998, garden full of weeds. Last spring she planted carrots, pulled one up and saw something shiny. Turned out to be a coin from 300 AD. Now there's a small team out there every weekend. I helped for a day. Found a pot shard and a nail. Nothing fancy. But seeing how excited they got over a nail, that got me. They said even nails tell you about daily life. Made me think about all the stuff under my own yard. Have any of you found something random like that, not at a known site?

The thing nobody mentions is what happens to your house price when they find something good. My mate's cousin had a similar thing up in Norfolk, not even a proper dig, just a detectorist who found a hoard on his land. The council got involved, the museum took the stuff, and suddenly his garden was classed as a site of interest. Took him two years to sell because buyers didn't want the hassle of restrictions on digging foundations. So yeah, it's exciting and all, but that nail might end up costing you a lot more than it's worth. Not saying she shouldn't enjoy it, just maybe check the small print before they go deeper.
